With this in mind, we decided to do a deep dive into the thrilling subject of humans who behave like mermaids and dolphins.  On a serious note: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!

Dolphin Boy (Film 2011)

A teenage boy called Morad experiences a violent attack which leaves him paralysed by trauma and capable of only muttering one word….”Mum”. The formerly popular student becomes imprisoned in his mind and following on from several failed attempts at therapy, his brilliant Father takes him to be treated by Dolphin Therapy at Eilat’s Dolphin Reef in the Red Sea. Slowly, Morad starts speaking again and immerses himself in life at the reef.  By spending so much time in water he evolves into a dolphin boy- he free dives to a depth of at least 65 feet and mimics the breathing of a bottlenose dolphin, that is, exhaling through his nostrils the way a bottlenose exhales through its blowhole.  As a result of the therapy, Morad was eventually able to testify against his attackers who were jailed and Morad was able to return home.

The Bajau Sea Nomads

The Bajau people travel in small flotillas throughout the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, hunting fish underwater for food. Many find it straightforward to dive up to 13 minutes 200 feet below the surface of the ocean.

Herbert Nitsch (Austrian Free Diver)

Nitsch set the world record for free diving in June of 2007 when he descended to a depth of 214 m (702 ft). however, in a subsequent dive in 2012 he went down to 253.2 metres (831 ft) and suffered severe decompression sickness and subsequently retired from competitive events.
